Someone close to me got toupet fundoplication surgery to correct a hiatal hernia. This was a robotic procedure and he was able to go home just a few hours after surgery. He wound up in the ER about a day later because he was unable to swallow any liquids. His esophagus was 100% blocked. After several days in the hospital on an IV, he is back home and is able to drink a small amount of liquid but with great difficulty (pain and reflux). It's possible that the problem is swelling that will continue to subside, but he's convinced the surgery was botched. How long should he remain patient to wait for the possibility that the problem will resolve once the swelling subsides?
