We're in a population boom thanks to fossil fuels, and our population either has to decline (accepting death and dying gracefully rather than propping up the near-dead with resource-costly modern medicine, for one, and also working on prevention) or we very quickly make do on much, much less.
SO2 is a technological stop-gap that is appealing because it might allow us, currently living, to keep living the way we're used to, with not enough consideration about future generations, including those other life forms with whom we're interdependent.
