Ask HN: How could Astronomy and Computer Science work together?

1 pointsby speedylight10 months ago
I’ve always wondered how I can find a job that involves knowledge of computer science and astronomy, but it seems like the only way they could work together is when it comes to analyzing data in some boring windowless lab somewhere. I want to be in the field so to speak working in an actual observatory where I could play a part as a computer scientist, is this possible?

The BIG observatories are operated semi-remotely; the onsite people are choosing from a preplanned set of observations based on sky conditions etc.
https://www.gemini.edu/observing/start-here
There's plenty of IT-flavored work on site: lots of data being captured / filtered / processed, but I'm not sure that's what you're looking for.
