When I hear DHH talk about the anti-vaxx truckers in Canada he sounds exactly like how Joe Rogan, Elon Musk and Russell Brand talk about it. How much does he really know? Where does he get his news from? Does he know how the truckers were occupying Ottawa for many weeks and setting up an encampment with spas, bouncy castles? How they were blocking the streets and terrorizing the citizens? How some were trying to get meals meant for the homeless? How they were bankrolled by US anti-vaxxers, the US far-right? How about the truckers that blocked the Ambassador bridge, threatening movement of goods between the US and Canada. Hardly a peaceful protest. DHH may have invented Rails but when it comes to Canada's affairs he's a moron.
"Meanwhile, the EU is threatening the owner of X, Elon Musk, with severe consequences if he does not abide by its arbitrary definition of what defending us all against "misinformation" and "hate speech" looks like."
As a German I'm happy that it's illegal to push Antisemitism and the holocaust here, and call for violence against Jews. It's not "arbitrary".
If you live in a free country, say "fuck" on TV. Working for a US company one person (European) in a phone call said "fuck", and got into trouble for it. Free speech?
"this authoritarian crackdown."
Or try to drink a beer from an open bottle on
Times Square. Or sit on the lawn. I can run around half naked. No problem in Germany, authorities mostly get out of your way, in the US, you step out of line and the state slaps you. Authoritarian anyone?
Whenever I'm in the US, it feels like a police state. Police everywhere, you step out of line you get into conflict with the authorities. And not only with the police, authoritarianism is deep in the culture. Once I skipped an empty line in a museum, I was forced to go back and go the long zigzag way even if there was no one except me (Metropolitan Museum of Art). Once when not getting into a straight line after waiting (though I was second by arrival), a security guard forced to get to the end of the line or I could not go on the Manhattan ferry. Whenever I go to the US I have to fill out long forms that feel like right out of 1984. Once I was asking customs a question, was shouted at, handled like a prisoner and nearly denied entry.
This is the whole foot testing the waters for the inevitable Trump support announcement.
Immigrants who get rich seem even more insufferable than the native-born rich.
