Ask HN: “Pay Whatever You Want" – has anyone tried?

1 pointsby weitingliu9 months ago
Has anyone ever tried the “Pay Whatever You Want” model, particularly for B2B products?
We are trying this experiment for Arc (global talent recruitment):
https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:7229846364510203905/
So instead of requiring companies to pay 20% of salary as the placement fee, we allow clients to decide the amount they pay (hopefully) based on the perceived value they’d get after making the hire.
Interestingly, I decided to do this after my second 10-day Vipassana meditation retreat. I was deeply inspired by organizations that offer their services for free but accept voluntary payment or donation (if a non-profit) of any amount.
This was a decision based on intuition rather than detailed analysis. Now as we’re running this experiment, I’m curious if anyone has tried this before?
(I know Radiohead has done this decades again when MP3s were still novel)
Any insight + advice would be greatly appreciated Thank you!
