Forced choices reveal a trade-off between cognitive effort and physical pain

I think most of us, when offered the choice explicitly, would choose cognitive effort out of pride, and yet we all choose pain over cognitive effort many times, the pain of boredom and confusion, of unrealized visions and unexpressed ideas.
