Licensing clarity is a good point.
WordPress uses the GPL, which has nothing to say about an integrated service that provides upgrades for plugins. It doesn't say that such a service has to be provided, but I can certainly see how people might assume it's part of what they have and they have a continuing right to use that service.
The GPL doesn't discuss related trademarks either, and what right you might have to use them. WordPress does somewhat cater to companies that sell WordPress-as-a-service, so the lack of clarity wrt. the trademarks related to selling that service isn't good.
Imo those are good points, but the core point is: if your business depends on some open source developers outside your company, stay friends with them, and always remember that they need to be paid, one way or another.
