> You’re going to need to figure out how to either maintain long term compatibility with existing WordPress plugins and themes,
Kinda.
The block editor / Full site editing has started talk of the end of traditional themes. That is, in theory, it's been said one theme could be all anyone needs.
As for plugins, some dev education would help. General knowledge of basic OOP in the world of WordPress is very low. If you treat the CMS as a dependency, use interfaces and dependency injection then you're at least decoupled from the CMS. At that point, in theory writing one plugin for both - or more - CMS is doable, or pretty close.
If you could get a couple of the larger plugins to adopt this OOP approach other are more likely to follow.
A big ask? Yes. But sticking with the current Matt status quo is textbook insanity.
