Ask HN: Is there a real life VR simulator setup for driving?

3 pointsby gobins7 months ago
I(Australian) am a bit anxious about driving in the city in US. Was thinking if I can do some practice using a basic VR setup like those racing simulation. Anyone has experience setting something up like this?

There are games like:<p>- City Car Driving: <a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;store.steampowered.com&#x2F;app&#x2F;493490&#x2F;City_Car_Driving&#x2F;" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;store.steampowered.com&#x2F;app&#x2F;493490&#x2F;City_Car_Driving&#x2F;</a><p>- BeamNG Drive: <a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;store.steampowered.com&#x2F;app&#x2F;284160&#x2F;BeamNGdrive&#x2F;" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;store.steampowered.com&#x2F;app&#x2F;284160&#x2F;BeamNGdrive&#x2F;</a><p>- American Truck Simulator: <a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;store.steampowered.com&#x2F;app&#x2F;270880&#x2F;American_Truck_Simulator&#x2F;" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;store.steampowered.com&#x2F;app&#x2F;270880&#x2F;American_Truck_Sim...</a> (see loooong VR thread at <a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;forum.scssoft.com&#x2F;viewtopic.php?t=330624" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;forum.scssoft.com&#x2F;viewtopic.php?t=330624</a>)<p>that might give you a rough feel, but they are not meant to be driving certifications or anything like that. If you&#x27;re going to be here in the US for an extended amount of time, maybe take a driving course from a local instructor?<p>Driving on the right (if &quot;incorrect&quot;) side of the road would scare me to death, though... that, and stop signs and roundabouts... =&#x2F; Good luck!

I have no idea, but that sounds pretty cool. Here&#x27;s what I could find.<p><a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;store.steampowered.com&#x2F;app&#x2F;2599450&#x2F;EarthKart_Google_Maps_Driving_Simulator&#x2F;" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;store.steampowered.com&#x2F;app&#x2F;2599450&#x2F;EarthKart_Google_...</a><p><a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;www.mapchannels.com&#x2F;AnimatedRouteMaps.aspx" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;www.mapchannels.com&#x2F;AnimatedRouteMaps.aspx</a><p>via<p><a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;old.reddit.com&#x2F;r&#x2F;GoogleMaps&#x2F;comments&#x2F;8034mo&#x2F;are_there_any_simulators_for_driving_through&#x2F;" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;old.reddit.com&#x2F;r&#x2F;GoogleMaps&#x2F;comments&#x2F;8034mo&#x2F;are_ther...</a><p>Have you looked into GTAV? You could put in cheat codes to prevent hostiles if you need to focus on your driving. It has a first person view mode, but I don&#x27;t know how the VR support is for it, but it does have a huge modding community.<p><a href="https:&#x2F;&#x2F;en.wikipedia.org&#x2F;wiki&#x2F;Grand_Theft_Auto_V" rel="nofollow">https:&#x2F;&#x2F;en.wikipedia.org&#x2F;wiki&#x2F;Grand_Theft_Auto_V</a>
