The article doesn’t mention it but there are also pioneer bacteria&#x2F;archae species that jumpstart colonization of fresh volcanic land before it cools to ambient temperature and starts to support other life. While the ground is still hot, they’ve got no competitors and are free to do their work. They’re the first to free carbon and nitrogen for other species to use.<p>Some species are capable of nitrogen fixation in the presence of oxygen at high temperatures without expensive organelles and there have been directed evolution experiments trying to get that pathway working at lower temperatures to use for fertilizer production.
