They describe how to bust open the excel file and look at the component xml to figure out exactly how the data was manipulated. It's nothing ridiculously sophisticated just a great example of very motivated digging.
I don't think anyone who spent more than 5 minutes in academia post undergrad is surprised that BSchool research is rotten. Their purpose is to rub shoulders with wealthy donors, not produce science.
