Interesting story but “At least half a dozen false alarms” out of 300k isn’t a “deluge.” Sure, lots of money spent to answer the false alarms but who knows how many lives were saved through the campaign.

Some magazines went through this phase too. <i>Texas Monthly</i> produces some of the best journalism in the US, but I had to stop reading it in the late 90s because it contained scratch and sniff perfume ads that made the magazine smell like a bordello.<p>Fortunately they seem to have stopped doing that.
