If you are sophisticated and resourced, this is the way to go. You must be prepared and educated end to end. It does not work at scale because of the inefficiencies of having to sell door to door to unsophisticated, price sensitive homeowners, and volatile commodity prices in a capital intensive and interest rate sensitive space. Solar coops are the least worst option for pursuing solar for a residential professional install; they aggregate hundreds of homes and have solar installers bid for the entire package. Utility solar is cheaper, and more certain for everyone from contact signing, financing, development, and finally commissioning and ongoing O&M.
The NREL’s SolarApp SaaS has made material progress in automating permitting to reduce soft costs, but sales and financing commissions are still extortionate and challenging to cram down.
https://gosolarapp.org/
