I am not bothered by the new UI/UX at all. Bitwarden still does what I need it to after many years of use. The major features are all working for me.
I also use 1Password, which has many more features. If "modernizing" Bitwarden is part of an attempt to make extra features easier to implement, then it's a good thing IMO.
Perhaps security-minded users are also more stubborn and less tolerant of change due to the already high levels of friction added by any attempt to be more secure. Also, for example, we can tolerate change in creativity software because at the end of the day the result is a pleasing dopamine release. When the result is just a working password manager, the satisfaction is often not enough to offset the growing pains.
My first immediate reaction was that it is awful, but I'm not sure actually, I think I can get used to it. The only real UX "bugs" I found so far:
- the frontpage for Vault no longer shows the categories (Login/Card/Identity) you have to use filter now for that (= +2/3 more clicks)
- when you search something there is no way to "go back" or clear the search, you have to manually clear the search text from the input field
More design related:
- the new "compact mode" should probably be the default and it also should decrease the font size (although you can just zoom-out)
Also I think some user complains where already addressed via settings, in Appearance you can switch on "Compact Mode" (also you should zoom in once more Ctrl+Minus once or twice) and turn on "Show quick copy actions on vault".
Tech is Typescript/Angular/Tailwind btw. pretty bloated as expected, but whatever
The client is GPL, development happens in the open: https://github.com/bitwarden/clients
I am getting used to good products becoming worse for reasons that are never explained. As long as I am not seeing ads in the interface this is still better than forgetting a password.
In the latest update, you can switch back to the classic behaviour:
- Settings > Appearance > Show quick copy actions on Vault
- Settings > Autofill > Click items to autofill
