I think the above statement is still unqualified given that there exists no other form of advanced cognition which reasons about the universe and the state of reality, or is able to create a mechanism for artificial cognition. When AI can do that without being rote or reliant on humans to learn and correct itself, then it will reach some form of AGI. That said, I agree with the writer that there’s nothing fundamentally different about human brain and AGI brain, provided both are self-conscious. The sentience bar for consciousness is insufficient as it cannot differentiate between p-zombies, which lack both feelings and awareness, and AGI.
