Coal being from the north and west demanded logistics for supply which in turn fuelled (sorry) the shipbuilding, docks, ultimately the railways, you name it. It altered the value of land ownership from sheep ("the staple" was the national wool export to Europe for centuries) to coal and iron, it made massive fortunes away from London.
