I always really enjoy this guy's videos. This one in particular is a great demo reel of what he's capable of - the creativity on display, combined with his knowledge of how flutes work, is such a joy to witness. He's extremely talented musically too - it's always fun to watch his compositions after his various experiments.
The guy just totally embodies the hacker spirit in a domain that many of us never touch (i.e. acoustic instruments). Really cool stuff.
I played brass instruments in middle school. It was a lot of fun starting at the trumpet and working up to a tuba.
I remember the first time as an adult seeing other people invent new instruments and it was a bit of a mind bender for me. All of the instruments I had been exposed to in band had just sorta always existed for me, so people inventing new instruments was something totally unexpected.
It must take a very interesting mind to envision a sound and embark on a journey to make an instrument that actually functions.
Years ago I remember a guy who realized that the primary sound maker for woodwind and brass instruments are all in the mouthpiece, and he went around fitting reeds to trumpets and flutes and trumpet mouthpieces to reed instruments. Actually sounded pretty good.
