Haven't read the article yet, but the headline is silly. We were never "promised Star Trek" by anyone (Star Trek is fiction), chatbots aren't "lousy" (they are extremely impressive technology that most people would have thought was impossible ten years ago), and nobody has "settled" for them -- there is still tons of money being poured into improving the current state of AI.
"It's not Star Trek" is just an incredible reason to be cynical about a new technological advance.
Whether it was hula hoops or blockchains, when has any "great new thing" ever delivered on the hyped-up benefits?
EDIT: As tocs3 pointed out, I should have added "...but without any huge & unheralded downsides".
> We need more science fiction-inspired thinking in how we approach AI research, argues AI expert Gary Marcus.
Why isn't this AI expert making instead of complaining and writing nonsense?
