# What We Do
Aisle50 enables consumers to save on groceries while helping bricks-and-mortar grocery retailers battle the encroachment of big box stores and Amazon. Our sales team sources offers directly from manufacturers, and we pass those savings (often 30-60% off) to the shopper through our website.
Shoppers love us because our offers are easy to use and provide much bigger savings than typical coupons—sometimes more than $10 at a time.
Manufacturers love us because our programs are cheap and easy to execute—printing paper coupons is expensive. We give manufacturers the opportunity to make the sale before the customer ever gets to the store. It’s a strategy that works: 80-90% of people who buy Aisle50 offers haven't bought the product in the previous three months, so we're truly introducing the product to new people—the ultimate goal of the manufacturer.
Grocery stores love us because we drive trips to the store and, much like gift cards drive extra spending beyond the value of the cards, consumers spend more at the store when they redeem Aisle50 offers.
# Why We're Hiring
Mobile is growing and important part of grocery. Not everybody in the store has a smartphone, but nobody has a desktop. We have a mobile-optimized site and a lightweight native app now, but we want to provide an awesome customer experience in the store and we need more robust mobile apps to do it.
Things we want to do in mobile:
* Put out slick mobile solutions that keep pace with our ever-evolving webapp.
* Integrate a UPC scanner to make it easy for people to know whether an item is included in our offers. (Our largest in-store issue occurs when consumers grab the wrong items)
* As we get tighter with our retailer partners, we need to be able to package our mobile offerings within the apps belonging to retailers, something that will require thorough knowledge in mobile development.
* We’d like to integrate with solutions that allow us to locate a consumer within the store to keep the right messages, alerts and offers in front of them.
# Who We're Hiring
* Likely 4-6 years experience writing software, with 1-2 years in mobile
* Both iOS and Android experience would be excellent, but we know that’s a tall order. We’re excited to talk to candidates with core strength in one of them.
* Bonus for Rails experience, as it would be a plus if candidate can work on APIs the app will consume as well as the app itself
Our current team has limited mobile experience, so we need someone who brings that as a strength. You won't be entirely on your own - we'll be able to pick up the languages pretty fast. But with any technology, the environment and tooling is one of the biggest hurdles. We need someone who knows how to set up a project from scratch, pull in the right libraries, and create a solid foundation that is going to work for us long-term. Since we’ll be vendoring code to our grocery partners as well as shipping our own native apps that foundation will need to be highly modular as well.
# What It's Like Here
Aisle50 currently has 15 employees (see http://aisle50.com/team). All the devs work with and report directly to the co-founders.
We believe in the paramount importance of the customer experience. We have a number of constituencies, so walking the line between what's good for shoppers, manufacturers, and retailers is a difficult but rewarding daily challenge. We're humble about our code. We try to mitigate risk by taking small steps and creating safety nets (eg: test-driven development, continuous integration).
Our process is inspired by Agile and Kanban but with such a small team we're pragmatic about doing what works. We have a weekly meeting and a morning check-in to make sure we aren't losing focus. In and out of those meetings we talk with each other about what we're working on, what's important, and how to solve problems. We're all responsible for actively improving the company and the product. Developers' ideas are consistently being knit into our products.
We eat lunch together every day. It's not required or anything, we just like each other :)
# Stack
Our current tools include:
Rails
Ruby
heroku
postgres
mailgun
S3
rackspace (we need a static IP for some of our retailer integrations)
rspec
*json API
We develop on Macbook Pros, 24-inch monitors and faux-wood IKEA desks. We all use different editors.
The job is in Chicago. Interested? Email us at mobilejob@aisle50.com
