Ask HN: App renaming dillima

1 pointsby kuxover 11 years ago
Six months ago I created an Android app to control the Philips Hue smarthome lighting system with little thought given to the name at that time. Since then, the app has grown significantly, and I'm now considering supporting other home lighting systems. I'm about to launch a social color/animation sharing feature that will strongly commit me to the app name & app web domain, so it is time to decide the name for good. I tentatively announced a new name a few weeks ago, but have received negative user feedback, so I am hesitant to continue to the rebrand.
old name: HueMore +established brand -namespace conflict on iOS -negative SEO since don't own domain +have more users than iOS app -name very specific to Philips Hue
new name: LampShade.io for Philips Hue +/- coopt a common english word for familiarity + own domain - .io is awkward in an app/product name + great SEO with .io - user annoyance of rebrand
Edit: web SEO is important here because it ties into Google Play store SEO, and I have competitors
