I loathe flat design, which has recently become the "in" thing.
I don't want to get into reasons, since design preferences are subjective and there is no "proof" as to why it's good or bad.
(One thing I am pretty sure of: Several years from now, people will look back at these flat designs and laugh, just like we do about 80's hair styles. But I digress.)
Since this is a matter of preference, I wanted to know where HN readers stand on this. So, in the poll below, can you click on the option that best describes your attitude towards flat design?
It might also be helpful to give your age range in any responses, so we can see if there is a correlation between age and preference for flat design.
I am neutral.
In design school there was a common notion that proper design is not beholden to any tools.
A piece of software does not make someone a great designer just as a pencil does not make someone a great illustrator.
Fads, trends, styles, movements, etc. are merely tools. Knowing when to use those tools is what separates the good from great.
"[Flat] is the worst form of [design], except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."
Given a choice between Skeuomorphism overload and the look of bundled software with a new Motherboard I'd opt for Flat any day.
There is good flat design and there are also bad implementations of it. Here is a collection of well done flat designs: http://fltdsgn.com/
