Beacon (YC W14) is looking for writers

1 pointsby zmitrialmost 11 years ago
We're a journalism start-up focused on finding alternatives to the ad-supported model. Since launch, we've paid $100K+ to writers working with us - we have 100+ writers covering everything from the conflict in Yemen to the difficulties of hitchhiking to Africa from California. Starting in July, we're focusing on a few areas intensely: these include the environment, tech in the developing world, education and net neutrality. We'll have matching funds available for writers interested in crowdfunding around these topics. We want Beacon to provide a level of support equivalent to a salary at traditional publication.
Readers on Beacon choose a writer to support. That writer takes home the vast majority of the proceeds. The readers gets access to their stories, and every story by every writer on Beacon.
To get a sense of what we do, here's an example project:
http://beaconreader.com/projects/climate-confidential
The ideal writer:
- Is a journalist, blogger or photographer with an established following.
- Hates ads, or at least wants to experiment with alternatives to an ad-supported model.
- Wants to have real interacts and engagement with their audience - this is critical.
- Knows their stuff.
If you're a writer who meets those criteria and is excited about writing about one of those topics (or even something else entirely), e-mail dan@beaconreader.com.
