I teach high school, and in one of my classes a student ran an investigation where she asked for volunteers to abstain from using facebook for one week. It was a really interesting experience. Most of the adults I mentioned this to assumed that no high school student would even consider quitting social media.<p>She got about ten volunteers, and it was a positive experience for everyone involved. Not everyone quit fb altogether, but everyone became more intentional about their use and more self-aware of their use. People said things like, "I realized I was using my phone to hide from my peers in class. Now I'm talking to more people in real life, and I'm happier as well."<p>Every generation needs to learn how to manage its distractions. It's wonderful to see people thinking critically about their own use habits.
