I get to the office, sit at my computer, wonder how someone would go about doing a certain thing and type in github.com in my browser. "Oh wow they sort of cleaned up and spaced out their look on the front end" I think. Then I realize I can't do what I came to do - without logging in. So we can no longer search open source repos without being logged in? This doesn't seem like a big issue now but I spend probably 30 or more minutes researching open source, whats new, whats going on. My searches arent always on the same computer and sometimes they are on my phone when I scroll to the bottom of the mobile site and tell it I want the desktop version just so I can browse github while walking around on my phone. I learned a lot over the years stumbling into new things on github because it was so much different than the Apple store setup of "here are 20 things we think are cool" apart from the 20,000 other things that came out this week.
My love for github was the years I connected and learned before even needing/using/learning git. Maybe the search is hidden out there now but I'm going to miss it on the front of github.com
Open an incognito or private browsing window and try this link: https://github.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=foo
So, search still works without signing in, but the link doesn't seem to be available on the front page.
[Meta: I just used 'vouch' for the first time. I vouch for the post, not the user, which appears to be a throwaway.]
