Ask HN: What's a tolerable network latency for development?

2 点作者 pipu超过 8 年前
Hello
I'm changing VPS providers and I have a couple of options. I can have the VPS located in either Frankfurt or Helsinki. Frankfurt gives me ~40 ms and Helsinki ~5 ms latencies.
I'm planning to move some of my development to the VPS and would like to know your opinion about a tolerable latency. This is of course very subjective, but any experience would be very appreciated. Like is 35 ms a total turn-off in your opinion or something like that.
I will of course try them before committing to anything, but I usually believe it's hard to make a reasonable decision on things like these in a short testing period (then again, if the performance is obviously intolerable, then it is and that's that).
I use SSH, tmux and vim.
Thank you a lot!
