I think that the gain in productivity from the search service already has a higher economic impact than advertising.

It would be interesting to see if there's any correlation between Google's economic impact number for a region and the overall economic health of the region.<p>The economic impact of Google could very well be a decent proxy for businesses adapting to the information age (and reaping their rewards).
