Saw an interesting question posited in a comment thread yesterday, and figured it deserved its own thread.
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15910036
> I keep meaning to do an Ask HN about this. "What does living in San Francisco mean to you?" I am curious what other peoples experience with the city is. There's so many lifestyles possible and ways to enjoy the city.
For me: SF was the place that brings the right minds together in the right way for serendipity to take its own course naturally. That's it. Other things are nice (diversity, nature, weather, location), of course… but those are minor concerns. It just so happens that critical mass developed here, and that a San Francisco presence is a now a huge boon, if not a requirement, for optimizing for success.
There are lots of things I hate about SF: politics, litter, homelessness, cost, housing, crime, traffic, lack of transportation, lack of anything done competently by the government. But despite all that, the right people are here, and that's everything that matters.
(FYI—from Switzerland, 10 years in SF, now split 33% SF, 33% NYC, 16.7% Asia, 16.7% Europe)
