Today I'm turning to the HN community for advice. After having spend countless hours reading HN, this is now my first submission :)
I have a Computer Science background (officially I'm still an enrolled student) and since 8 months I'm now the technical co-founder in a Berlin startup, which I founded with two friends whose expertise lies mostly in the Business, sales and operations part.
This leaves me responsible for all technical aspects and the development of the MVP stage product. I'm supported by one co-founder who has taken charge of Design and content (maintaining our Webflow landing page).
Since the beginning we have been struggling with the question who should be responsible for the product (Product Management/Product Owner). Almost naturally my co-founders expected me to manage this.
It's generally something that I would love to do, but I struggle to reconcile both responsibilities (PM and being the sole developer) in one person.
• both roles require very different levels of thinking: detail vs. big picture. In the past months it has been hard for me to do big picture thinking when there are so many other (immediate) demands on my time
• I also feel that naturally there should be a struggle/argument between PM and tech lead where the product roadmap is the result of a fruitful discussion and compromises
• being responsible for the execution of all nitty-gritty details I can't see myself objectively arguing about the trade-offs of different features
• I'm probably not the best at challenging my own solutions in the same way as an "external" person would do
But then again I'm also thinking about the fact that startups are never operating in an ideal situation and that I should maybe just show more motivation in rising up to this challenge.
If you have experienced a similar situation, I'm eager to hear your advice. Do you think it's possible (and advisable) to have both roles handled by the same person?
