Ask HN: Do phones and/or Gmail listen to convos for the purpose of serving Ads?

Backstory: Last week, My wife suggested we get a SodaStream instead of me buying 2L Sodas all the time. A week later, I was having a lengthy discussion about SodaStream during lunch yesterday and how the price efficiency works out to about $0.35 per serving or something like that. 13 hours later, receive an email (not a Gmail Ad) that resembles a newsletter with the subject line: “We see you have great taste.”
How can SodaStream possibly “see [i] have great taste?” I didn’t search for it, nor anything related to Soda. And even if I did, how could SodaStream possibly get my email address? My colleague doesn’t have my personal email address to submit for a referral.
I know I sound a little crazy and paranoid, but there is absolutely no way a machine learning model can take my browsing habits and infer my intent to purchase a soda stream... because there is absolutely 0 searches related to soda.
