It’s 2020 and more and more of our products rely on third-parties. We process payments, ship goods, build entire products around third-party software and/or services. How many of you have had to shut down a business because of a suspended account, an API key getting revoked, pay outs frozen or in limbo, etc.?
I’ve had a few close calls in my 20+ years as a developer. However lately as more and more third-parties become a necessity in the products we develop the businesses behind them become more vulnerable.
A payment processor I’ve worked with in the past just shut down the account of a new business that turned £1,000 MRR in month 2. There’s no arbitration, no dispute resolution, no way to appeal. This effectively puts the business out of business, no pun intended.
A couple of months ago we had an app pulled off one of the app stores. No explanation given. It took 21 days and two dozen emails to get in touch with a human to make an appeal. The app and business behind it luckily survived, but had it gone a little longer the outcome would have been different.
