Chernobyl fungus could shield astronauts from cosmic radiation

I’m not clear why it wouldn’t be easier to line the ship with melanin. You’d be able to make a denser layer than with the fungus, even dried and compressed. And you could incorporate some of it into the structure, reducing the weight penalty.
