Show HN: Accessible COVID-19 tracker for blind and visually impaired users

1 点作者 winwiz超过 4 年前
There are lots of trackers so why do we need another one? There are three features offered by virusquery.com that make its use easier for people who are blind or have low vision and use screen readers:
1. Less data. The information is shown in tabular form. By default it’s limited to the user’s country and restricted to the last few days. Can be narrowed down to a particular state or province if any. This allows to present only a few tabular rows and avoid distraction caused by listening to data not related to the user region. Sighted users who want to quickly check the data relevant to them could too find this feature convenient.
2. Refresh for data fetching. This feature ensures that refreshing/reloading a page is all what is required to get the latest coronavirus case counts. Handy on portable devices where it usually can be initiated by a gesture or in some other simple way.
3. Enhanced Tab key navigation. Screen reader users frequently navigate through webpages using Tab key. All browsers support it and draw a border around the control that currently has keyboard focus. The enhancement makes the border thicker and in addition to that the control’s surroundings get an additional border as well further emphasizing the location on a page where the keyboard focus is. This can be handy for a low vision user who had to interrupt the Tab key navigation and returned to the page later.
The last feature is turned off on portable devices where it somewhat clutters the screen, also the problem it solves is not as acute with smaller screen sizes. It’s not available on Internet Explorer 11 which is supported otherwise.
