Tired of seeing Rome pulled out as an example for everything. Lazy thinking. Similar to how the only example of a ‘bad’ leader is Hitler.<p>I’m sure, in the 2000 years since Rome, that there is probably another political system more suitable to use as a comparison to the US.<p>The truth is, the US has nothing in common with Ancient Rome. Not it’s religion, view of civics, concept of citizenship, law, property rights, economy, nor ideals.<p>In fact, the two cultures are so dissimilar, that one could just as well hold up the Incan or Mayan empires as valid (or, I should say, equally invalid) comparators.<p>Just because the Romans left a bunch of cool statues and buildings laying around that were copied by uncreative city planners and architects, does not mean the US has any particular similarity to Rome.<p>Just my opinion.
