How can someone monetize their open source project or what are some ways to make money from the project that you build

Add some enterprise / pro feature aside from the open source offering perhaps. Sidekiq and Passenger did this and are very successful

Talk to people that already use it and find out where they had trouble then sell your expertise to fix the problem.
