Fantasy sports are a great way to foster/maintain adult long-distance friendships too. I find standard fantasy pretty boring, but it can become a very interesting strategy game with a two tweaks:
1. Teams carry a significant number of "keeper" slots each offseason (maybe 1/3-1/2 of total roster size).
2. EVERYTHING is tradeable-- players, picks, FAB, keeper slots... everything.
Together these conditions allow teams to play with different strategies and on different time horizons, opening up a lot of innovative wheeling and dealing.
