Ask HN: How do you unblock websites?

1 点作者 higerordermap大约 4 年前
Many times when we have to use a network/ISP which blocks certain websites, there are a few ways to unblock them including proxies (in-browser) and VPNs.
Now assuming I don't belong to the crowd that exclusively uses no-log premium VPNs, what are secure options before me to, say, temporarily unblock websites?
I don't want to use one of those 1000 shady VPN apps on Google Play because God knows what they do to the device. I don't care about someone logging to which URLs I visit but proxy sites in my understanding can MITM https traffic, and also run their own ads & javascript on the browser which is last option for a security-conscious user.
So what are my options? Are there free limited VPN from trustworthy companies? (preferably OPEN ON/wireguard protocol because I wouldn't have to run their apps). Any trustworthy proxy site?

You can spin up a VM on any cloud host and then use an SSH tunnel. SSH can expose a SOCKS proxy on localhost so you can configure your browser to use that.

ProtonVPN and Windscribe both offer free tiers. Windscribe has a bandwidth limit, Proton is unlimited but only 3 locations and no P2P.
And there is always Tor.
