The Nintendo Switch has sold bazillions and comes in a handheld only model as well as the original.
On the hobby/indie side of things modded Gameboys are very popular as are modern consoles like the unreleased Playdate.
I'd recently bought a Nvidia Shield Tablet, did not tried games but since Krita has an Android version imho it is a big plus for the device, where the default Dabbler painting app was good too, but Krita is much a pro tool (imho again, I'm not a pro too :)). E.g. the feeling is way better in my opinion (on Dabbler can' t get no wobbly lines).
I'd also read about Valve and the Nintendo Switch, this latter to have an Oled display, wich is the only thing that might be missing on the ol' Shield... I did not understood if it will use the newest Nvidia Mx.
Hopefully they' ll add some tool for drawing :D.
The are currently rumours going around that Valve is developing a switch like portable pc which will be able to play a selection of the steam library
https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2021/05/exclusive-valve-is-ma...
seeing as it's almost E3, the time where most big video game related announcements happen, there is a good chance it will be revealed this month.
These days you have to win on the iOS/Android app stores.
Nintendo can still compete with specialized mobile hardware because of unique IP and quirky games only they can make. But I don't think there's room for another dedicated handheld devices. Especially as cloud gaming starts to become more of a thing.
