Google Replaces Millions of Intel's CPUs with Its Own Homegrown Chips

I think that with the fact that fabs&#x2F;custom silicon are becoming much more accessible you are going to start to see a trend of companies move towards their own custom designed processors more often. It just is so much more cost effective when you are talking millions of cores.<p>One of the things that has been so mind boggling to me is that hardware&#x2F;EEs get paid so little. Its going to be interesting to see their pay start to compete with SWE type of positions.

Note that those chips are application-specific, so it&#x27;s not quite the same as Apple&#x27;s or Amazon&#x27;s migration to ARM.

Not directly related, but I tried Amazons ARM based ec2 instances. The servers randomly hung.<p>A year or two later I tried again - the servers randomly hung.<p>I went back to Intel CPUs.

Where do the millions of CPUs go? Second-hand market? Curious what Xeon models they are.

Makes sense, it’s only a matter of time before the Intel Management Engine is exploited. Or perhaps it already has been.
