This article IMHO draws a pretty dystopian view of a future of everything-as-a-service, i.e. being at the mercy of enormous corporations even for the most simple task every time you use the service. This isn't a world I want to live in. Personal computing implies being in control of your data and code (even though you only purchased a copy of the software you need instead of compiling or writing it yourself). I think that Apple is doing fairly well in this respect so far, except for the side loading issues with iOS.<p>I agree with the author that Apple currently may not have a visionary person at the top of the company. This was a problem during the difficult times in the 90s and it seems to be similar after Steve Jobs' death.<p>But the way things are going right now, Apple could survive on the products of one of their product lines alone (e.g. Arm-based SoCs)...
