I try these so far under umbrellas of: Fake it ‘til I make it / triage and pick actions that resonate enough with my values / keep pushing myself to learn and grow rather than entrench (not easy for me):
- Pretend I’m a lobbyist and call my elected officials, practicing kindness and compassion while trying to convincingly push action that aligned with what I care about changing for life on earth.
- Live my values: short, cold showers; meat as treat; reduce or cut other luxuries (chocolate, alcohol, coffee, gasoline, electricity); repair > replace; do without upgrading for longer; buy durable tools and take care of them; make a budget and review it regularly; and more.
- Share with others the preceding list in hopes of inspiring action.
- Care for my body (mental, physical) in part so that I can better-care for others; the responsible hedonism of aircraft “secure your mask first”.
- Act to improve the health of land, water, and air. In my case that means re-wilding much of the small bit of land I occupy, composting for the garden, driving less and more efficiently (Car Talk suggests going slower up hills so the engine RPMs stay steady), taking fewer long trips (I’d like to never fly again, but family pressure can be strong), mow what little lawn we keep with a mechanical reel mower (exercise for me, and less noise and emissions), and use less energy in general.
As I learn more I’ll adjust. Lobbying others towards culture shift, combined with living it so I’m less hypocritical, feels like the best I can do right now.
