Ask HN: Cage around bed to survive building collapse?

2 点作者 matjazdrolc将近 4 年前
In lieu of the condo collapse in Miami and floods Germany I wonder how to protect oneself from being killed while sleeping.
Is it feasible to have some kind of metal cage around the bed? The idea is that the cage would leave you with a pocket of air and also shield you from parts of ceiling crushing you.
What other ideas do you have and what were your findings when doing further research?

A few years ago, an earthquake proof bed concept was making the rounds.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W-EcuKxykM

If you’re falling down 10 floors, a cage won’t save you.
If 10 floors fall on you, you need a very strong cage.
I think any money is better spent on preventing buildings from collapsing. You could see that as “make the cage as large as the room, and put one in each room”.

"In lieu of" means "instead of". Think of a lieutenant as a stand-in for a commander. In your post, you mean something like "related to" or "with that in mind".

I guess the Amazon wagie cage can be turned on its side to be repurposed for this.
If you’re already doing remote work for Amazon that’s two birds with one stone.
