I recommend categorizing some non-urgent, nice-to-have, non-intricate tickets as onboarding tickets. It takes discipline to set them aside and not touch them because it is so tempting to just get those done and out of the way, but they are great for new team members to play during their first days. If you deploy on merge, it gives them both a sense of accomplishment and a sense of belonging. Learning by doing is the best kind, especially when it comes to being introduced to the intangible aspects of the established mores of an established team.
