> Former ÖVP general-secretary Andreas Hanger lashed out at corruption prosecutors on Tuesday, arguing the agency has been harboring “leftist cells” and is working to support the ÖVP’s political opponents. His accusations were widely picked up by Austrian media, also because he subsequently failed to answer journalists’ questions on why he believed the supposedly anti-ÖVP prosecutor had the Social Democratic mayor of Salzburg jailed in 2019.
I can answer that question - because of "[the Salzburg Mayor's] part in a wider scandal in which local officials lost 340 million euros of public money in risky stock and debt trades" [1].
I'm confused why the journalists would even ask Andreas that. Even if the prosecutor were anti-ÖVP, as alleged, that does not mean he would overlook every non-ÖVP crime. But I'm sure the journalists knew that.
[1] https://www.reuters.com/article/us-austria-salzburg-scandal-...
