Ask HN: Western Pro-Sino Discussion Board?

4 点作者 preach超过 3 年前
I asked this question in a thread but it got rapidly downvoted for obvious reasons.
I’m looking for a Western discussion board (mainly English speakers) that hold a positive view of recent Chinese policies and their over all direction.
Any suggestions? Reddit’s r/sino is filled with anti-West memes and that just isn’t really a good place to have a level headed discussion about the pros and cons of China’s recent policies.
Thank you in advance.

Your mistake is that you're looking for a place with low barrier to entry that allows people to broadcast their opinions on a country whose language they don't understand. Of course it's going to be filled with low-effort memes.
You could start a r/sino alternative with a higher barrier to entry by allowing only effortposts, but that won't solve the language problem of English speakers primarily relying on English-language coverage written by English speakers recycling other English-language coverage ... ad infinitum, while most original sources are in Chinese and very little gets translated.
Your best bet for a level-headed discussion might be social science journals focusing on Chinese policy issues, which should ensure that every participant has some idea of what they're talking about. (Of course that also means they won't easily allow you to post your own opinion.) You shouldn't expect them to have a simple pro-Sino worldview, rather they'll have a differentiated opinion on their subject of study. A quick search turned up https://www.chinapolicyjournal.org/ which looks quite solid at first glance, but maybe a bit too deep in the weeds for you.

I think it's going to avoid bias here, but some of the geopolitical subs could be worth a shot like r/geopolitics/.
You might be interested in some of Nick Bostrom's writings on authoritarianism which would seem to support China's policies (assuming I understand them myself...) as a way to advance society more efficiently.

I doubt you will find a place that is not run by CCP shills. Most English speaking people don’t hold China in high regard, and for good reasons.
