I'm torn on this. On the one hand, this software is used for purposes that feel malicious to me. On the other hand, governments who use this software are allowed to enforce their laws and protect their interests. I'm also concerned that the US is enacting this ban only where convenient for them (when it is used against "activists"). The Biden administration recently began treating activist parents like terrorists (<a href="https://reason.com/2021/10/06/ag-merrick-garland-fbi-critical-race-theory-parents-schools-domestic-terrorists/" rel="nofollow">https://reason.com/2021/10/06/ag-merrick-garland-fbi-critica...</a>) but had no ethical or moral qualms doing so because it aligned with their present ideological/political views. This inconsistency makes me feel uncomfortable with the action taken around NSO because it seems like they're weaponizing a policy tool (Entity List) where it is convenient for them instead of being consistent. Lastly, a ban on software in particular feels a lot like a control on speech.
