If web3 was truly about owning your own identity it’d be way more about owning your own data as well. Not in the tokenised sense but in the actual sense of controlling access to it. Basically the data pods idea in Solid. Still decentralised, still using strong crypto for identity and sign in, you could even have the blockchain side of things optionally integrated if you really must.
The way things stand right now there are only incentives for people’s data to be hovered up, platforms to try to centralise and we’ll be back where we started quite quickly. See OpenSea and their issues with bots falsely minting NFTs en masse and their response to artists trying to report them. It’s web3 but is still user hostile.
Real ownership of your identity is ownership of your data.
