Culture is one of the most important things that foreign students get from US universities. Innovation, entrepreneurship, and more stem from the US having a more tolerant and open culture. Free speech truly has profound consequences for a society.
By forcing their own views on their citizens all over the world, the PRC diminishes the maximum value that can be extracted from the university experience. Fear and intimidation undermine creative and independent thought. This phenomenon is not limited to the Chinese, though I imagine they suffer the worst consequences for it.
As someone that views the growing global power of China as an existential threat for Freedom and Liberty, I for one am glad to see them shooting themselves in the foot here.
