Was thinking it would be interesting to see the sort of posts that get flagged. Does anyone know a way to view a list of posts that get flagged? Would love to mine the list for trends for curiosity sake.
Go to your profile https://news.ycombinator.com/user?id=tylermauthe an enable "showdead".
Someone made a tool for that: https://github.com/MoserMichael/flagged-hn
I am finding a lot of value in the posts that get flagged, but only after they get enough votes to appear on hckrnews.com. So reading those has become a routine for me. Most of those quite deserve their fate. But a surprisingly large number have valuable content that I'm not finding elsewhere.
It turns out that the combination of many-votes + flagged and killed is a strong value signal: Things That People Want To Talk About That Other People Don't Want Them To Talk About. I sincerely appreciate that HN does not entirely disappear them.
It's disappointing though that hckrnews.com has started to obscure those headlines, so you have to click through to decide if they are worthy of more attention. That's a backward step.
I think it would be cool if there were a list view at /flagged that included only flagged posts, similar to /ask or /shownew.
This way people can comment on controversial posts without the discussions seeping into the rest of the site.
Maybe dang will support this idea. He could even forego moderating it. :) It could be like a PvP wilderness section of HN...
You won't see them for long but if you go into your account settings and set "Showdead" to "yes" then you will see more of the flagged posts.
