I really like my LG OLED tv but I knew this kind of shenanigans would be something they did when I bought it. Also I've always found the built in "smart" functions on any tv to be slow, clunky and not customizable.
From day one I've never put it online. I use my Nvidia shield for all the smart functions because it's 5 years old and still super fast. I side load apps, I can root it, I can use the android ndk to compile binaries to run natively on it, etc...
It's unfortunate that the state of our electronics as a whole have become such as they are. All of them are just bad with these smart functions, and wait until they stop updating it and a bug is encountered that won't be fixed because it's out of warranty.
I just wish the consumer base as a whole would wake up and stop putting up with these shenanigans.
Since repair schematics are available for the hardware on these things, I sincerely believe that the software they run should be released similarly. Especially in the case where the warranty has expired, software, tooling to install, etc... Must be released in to the public as either public domain or under a license that allows modifications and redistribution.
