This was suggested as a possible solution to tracking the use of a stolen SD card. I have tested with it and it works well. Haven't had any real life experience with it.
Would the police even be able to use the IP and timestamp to request ISP records to get the user's identity? It would have visual evidence of an individual committing a summary offense, misdemeanor, and the card itself would be evidence of the theft (misdemeanor).
In theory I would think so. But in practice I wonder if they would even bother.

Canary pricing allows you to start immediately, with tiny upfront costs. An annual subscription of $7,500, gets you 5 Canaries, your dedicated hosted Console, your own Canarytokens server, as well as all our support, maintenance and upgrades.

Well, I guess go big or go home! :-)

I ran across this service while reading a blog post from Corey Quinn about AWS security. It turns out that CanaryTokens has a AWS IAM token generator that alerts whenever someone tries to use it. That's a great idea and I can see sprinkling credentials around would make a great tripwire.
https://blog.thinkst.com/2017/09/canarytokens-new-member-aws...
